UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif.—While there were plenty of new products that featured all the technological bells and whistles, quite a few attendees were just as impressed with some of the simpler items showcased during the AVN Novelty Expo 2009.

The three-day expo, considered the premier B2B event for the adult pleasure item industry, closed Wednesday, leaving behind many satisfied buyers and exhibitors.

Despite initial concerns about the scheduling of ANE and the ANME Founders Show so close together, in most cases exhibitors were happy with the attendance and business at ANE.

“It would have been a lot better if the conventions were not split in two,” said Joshua Maurice, president of sales for RockHard Laboratories. “I felt bad for most of the buyers; they were exhausted and split between the two shows. I feel like this political battle didn’t honor the larger purpose of having a place for interested buyers to find the best products for their needs.”

Though many exhibitors shared Maurice’s sympathy for buyers, the majority of exhibitors said they were happy that many international buyers were seen at ANE for the first time. And those buyers, they said, were interested in what they saw.

B3, a division of Big Teaze Toys, introduced the Onye Fleur line, which features some modifications to the original Onye line in an effort to drop the price point to $30-$35 instead of $55.

Scheduled for release this fall, the Fleur items are the same shape and size as the original Onye, and still feature a three-speed motor, but the five pulsation features have been dropped to help reduce the price. The band around the middle has been textured to feature a floral pattern, and the Fleur line will be available in pink, red and purple.

And not all of the popular items at ANE were powered. LELO officials showed off the prototypes of several new light-play BDSM products scheduled for release in the coming months, including classy whips with glass handles and pastel-colored leather strands, glass-handled feather dusters, and satin bags that hold a satin blindfold and restraint straps.

“They are very easy, because you just put your wrist through the loop and then cinch it,” LELO’s Shaye Saldana said.

Also coming soon from LELO is the LOLA, a new rabbit-esque vibrator that will be available in vibrant orange, grape and lime.

Liberator Bedroom Adventure Gear, which has made a name in the industry for creating shapes and playwear for couples, introduced a smaller version of its popular wedge that is packaged for distribution through home party companies.

Besides getting the chance to show off new offerings, many company officials said they were excited to have the chance at ANE 2009 to meet personally with others.

“It’s been great to get face-to-face time to talk with people we’ve been communicating with,” said Gary Elliott, director and owner of Rocks-Off. “There is nothing like face-to-face time.”

Rocks-Off launched four items at ANE 2009, including the new Arrow 120mm bullet, which was well received.

First-time exhibitor Jonathan Parks, creative director for DFNovelty.com—the company behind Pornaments, adult-themed holiday ornaments—said they were surprised by the positive response they got at all levels.

“This is our first year with this product line, and everyone who came by, as an exhibitor or as a buyer, was very helpful, he said. “We didn’t expect other exhibitors to be so helpful.”

Those unable to attend ANE 2009 can start their planning now for the B2B section of the Adult Entertainment Expo, scheduled for Jan. 7-10, 2010, at the Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas. For more information, visit AdultEntertainmentExpo.com.

SWEDISH ISP APPEALS COURT ORDER TO SURRENDER IP ADDRESSES

STOCKHOLM—A Swedish internet service provider plans to appeal a court order to hand over user IP addresses as per the country's anti-piracy IPRED law.

According to The Local, ISP Ephone said it will appeal the court ruling that it pass on customer information to five publishers investigating copyright violations.

Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet reports that the Solna District Court said Ephone will face 750,000 kronor ($95,000) in fines if it fails to comply with the order.

Ephone said it made the decision to appeal based on massive customer support from its customers and the general public, while the court is taking a drubbing in the Swedish court of public opinion for invading privacy.

Ephone has continued to argue that the court does not have sufficient evidence to obtain a guilty verdict—plus, other principles were at work.

"That's why we think it's important that the case is tried at a higher court," CEO Bo Wigstrand told Svenska Dagbladet.

Ephone is the first internet provider to be taken to court under the controversial IPRED law. The measure, based on the EU’s Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Directive, went into effect April 1. Under its terms, ISPs may be forced by a court order to release information about users suspected of copyright infringement.

In June, the Solna District Court found that there was probable cause that Ephone users were violating copyrights and ruled the company should pay five audio book publishers’ court costs of 75,000 kronor ($9,500).

The publishers are the first to call on IPRED; 15 authors claim their work has been passed on illegally on the internet through file sharing and have demanded to know the name of the owner of a server allegedly containing some 2,000 audio book titles.

Ephone countered a password was required to access the material said to be on the computer and argued the sound files weren’t publicly accessible so it wasn’t a case of copyright infringement.

As noted by TechDirt, since the implementation of IPRED, some Swedish ISPs have been deleting log files, claiming it was another step to protect customer privacy—though it was also seen as a way to foil IPRED.

INTERNET WEARY ADULTS HEADING BACK TO OLD TIMES

Young adults in Australia are increasingly getting nostalgic and pining for simpler times, as they have got sick of Internet and partying.

A study of young adult culture has revealed that the 16-30 year olds have had enough of chatting with friends since a year ago, and now they want to spend more face-to-face time with loved ones.

And they increasingly prefer to do that at home rather than going out to noisy, potentially dangerous pubs and nightclubs.

The annual Urban Market Research survey compiled by youth marketing agency Lifelounge, was conducted on 1600 young adults.

It was found that those still living with their parents (about half) had noticed the global financial crisis’s impact on the family, and pared back their lifestyle in response.

The survey also showed that the youngsters were no longer intrigued by technology, as the time spent online had gone down 30 minutes a week from last year, while their consumption of newspapers increased by the same amount.

Facebook and Twitter are also still on the rise, but losing some of their cachet.

"Nostalgia and simplicity ... (are) influencing the styles they’re adopting, the products they’re purchasing and their entertainment choices," The Australian quoted Lifelounge chief executive Dion Appel as saying.

"Parents’ vinyl records are suddenly interesting and vintage clothes are de rigueur.

"And they want more connections with their friends that aren’t digital, that are tangible. They’re starting to question the authenticity of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

"They want technology to assist rather than dominate the way they communicate," added Appel.

The study found that overall spending on music, entertainment, travel, fashion, and sport was down more than 5 billion dollars in the year to March, from 47.5bn dollars to 42.4bn dollars.

It also found declines in time spent on the Internet (down almost half an hour from last year to 8.6 hours a week) and free-to-air television viewing, down 1.3hours to 4.4hours a week.

However, young adults average another five hours a week watching DVDs and four hours on pay-TV.

ANAHEIM, Calif. – During its 12th annual event, Gay Days at Disneyland expects to attract more than 30,000 LGBT visitors from across the U.S. to Disney’s famous theme park in Anaheim, Calif.

The unofficial event — neither publicly sanctioned nor supported by the Walt Disney Co. — is scheduled for Oct. 2-4.

Gay Days Anaheim is a “mix-in” with the park’s other weekend guests, but gays and lesbians are encouraged to wear red shirts in order to identify each other and to show strong numbers. Official T-shirts are available at the official Gay Day at Disneyland website, GayDaysAnaheim.com.

Both days in the park will have gathering times for specific groups including gay youth (sponsored by The Trevor Project, the only 24-hour suicide prevention hotline in the U.S. devoted to GLBT youth), families, women, singles, couples and bears. There will be scavenger hunts and a group photo inside the park. A complete schedule is available at the Gay Days website.

The weekend opens Friday with “Wonderland,” a dance party with DJ Ray Rhodes (Tiger Heat, KBIG 104). The party will be hosted by Los Angeles drag diva Momma and will benefit The Trevor Project. The action begins at 9:30 p.m. and will run until 1 a.m. at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen, located in Downtown Disney at the Disneyland Resort. Tickets are $20 at the door.

Saturday will be Gay Day at Disneyland, culminating in “Kingdom,” the weekend’s signature dance party with music from renowned DJ Kimberly S and live headliners. Previous guests have included Matt Zarley, Shoshana Bean and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson. The event will take place at the House of Blues Anaheim in Downtown Disney from 9 p.m. until 1:30 a.m. Tickets are $35 in advance; $45 at the door.

Sunday will be Gay Day at Disney’s California Adventure.

Other events slated for the weekend include free screenings at the Gay Days Entertainment Center (located inside the Trillium Room of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel) and a Gay Days Pin Trading event on Sunday at the Gay Days Info Center (also located inside the Trillium Room).

Discounted hotel rooms and park tickets are offered at GayDaysAnaheim.com.

Sponsors for the event include Holiday Inn Buena Park, Howard Johnson Anaheim and the Anaheim/Orange Country Visitor and Convention Bureau. Media sponsors are HX, Frontiers, PIX, Odyssey Hawaii, Gay Chicago magazine, The New York Blade and Q Vegas.

CANADIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE ABANDONS CHALLENGE TO INTERACTIVE MALE LOGO

"We’re a voice and video chatline for gay men," says a company representative. "No one is going to mistake us for anything Olympic."

VANCOUVER—Following accusations it was attempting undue suppression of a gay dating website’s rights to free speech and promotion, the Canadian Olympic Committee has withdrawn its objection to the company’s trademark application.

The COC claimed Interactive Male’s logo was confusingly similar to a symbol used to denote an Olympic wrestling event … in 1976.

“We have an obligation to protect various Olympic Games-related marks, which include pictograms,” COC representative Isabelle Hodge told The Vancouver Sun. “But after reviewing all the information, we agree with Interactive Male that there’s little chance this particular pictogram will cause any confusion with existing Olympic pictograms.”

The Interactive Male logo has been in use since 2004. Parent company Teligence filed a Canadian trademark application including the logo in March 2005. According to Joe Rachert, senior manager of promotions and public relations for Interactive Male, the COC’s objection to the application surfaced only after the Canadian federal government passed a bill restricting the use of certain verbiage and symbols when they are employed in such a way as to imply an official relationship with the Winter Games scheduled for Vancouver in 2010.

Even in that light, the COC’s arguments were specious, Rachert said.

“It’s hard to resist the obvious jokes about confusing the COC with a gay men’s dating service,” he said. “Our advertising reflects our logo and often depicts two male models interacting in a manner that does not resemble any Olympic sporting activity that I’ve ever seen. Of course, there’s always a little sport involved in dating. But let’s face it: We’re a voice and video chatline for gay men. No one is going to mistake us for anything Olympic.”

Rachert told The Vancouver Sun that Interactive Male spends about $10 million annually on North American advertising, so the company was loath to ditch its recognizable logo.

“Our logo is a meaningful representation to the GLBT community,” Rachert said. “We have invested a great deal of money and energy in building our brand through advertising, sponsorship and community involvement, so we want to protect that investment.”

Regardless, Rachert said the public should continue to question whether the Canadian government has overstepped its bounds in attempting to protect the Vancouver Olympics from a non-existent threat.

“I think the public needs to question the extent and power of the COC’s domain,” he said. “The COC images are drawings of people playing sports; our logo is letters that vaguely resemble stick men. … Who will they go after next? Will Canada have to change all the stick-figure washroom signs?”

MAC ATTACK: BEWARE OF PUPER TROJAN

CUPERTINO, Calif.—While Macs are still less susceptible to viruses and attacks in general compared to Windows OS computers and other machines, don't get so smug, Mac users.

Web security researchers have found a Trojan malware called Puper that literally disguises itself as a Mac Cinema installer and attempts to download other malware, said MXLogic in a security bulletin.

Security firm McAfee reports the attack appears to users as a disk image, which launches an installer application for the faux Mac Cinema software. Once the installer completes the app download, the user becomes infected with a script file named AdobeFlash.

McAfee reports that the malicious script launches every five hours and attempts to download and launch other malware as well.

In June, security researchers at Sophos reported a similar Mac Trojan that disguised itself as a video codec. The malware, called Jahlav, was embedded in what appeared to be a pornography site that required users to download the file to see video, said PC Magazine.

"Some Mac users may have thought that it was safe to surf for porn on their Apple Mac, but they were wrong," said Sophos senior tech consultant Graham Cluley.

As Macs are often used for video production, adult industry users should be aware of the fake Mac Cinema Puper Trojan and take necessary steps to prevent infestation.

APPLE SAYS NO PORN

PG.BIZ.- After the news that the implementation of parental controls in the iPhone's 3.0 operating system now made it possible for more mature content on the App Store, many users were excited by the possibilities.

Not simply from a porn perspective, but by the idea that fewer restrictions would be placed on the content of games and applications.

However, not long after the story broke that Hottest Girls now included nudity, the application was pulled from the App Store. According to the developer, it made the decision to pull it due to the strain on its server.

It now seems that Apple has stepped in and returned to its Mary Whitehouse style policies and removed all such applications from the App Store.

"Apple will not distribute applications that contain inappropriate content, such as pornography," a statement sent by Apple to CNN reads. "The developer of this application added inappropriate content directly from their server after the application had been approved and distributed, and after the developer had subsequently been asked to remove some offensive content. This was a direct violation of the terms of the iPhone Developer Program. The application is no longer available on the App Store."

So it seems we're back to the random and confusing submissions process. Not that we particularly want the App Store to become an online porn hawker, but a greater freedom of choice was very appealing for a few wonderful moments.
